Top 5 last-minute study tips
In the last few weeks leading up to your exams, it’s time to up your study game.
1. Go into shut-down mode
Not you – your computer or mobile device! Have you ever noticed how time gets away from you when you’re online? If you do need to look something up or use resources online, do, but log off as soon as you’ve finished. Use a focus app if you need to be more disciplined about distractions.
Remember, too, that the blue light from computer screens, mobile phones and tablets also interferes with your body clock, so working on a screen late at night can prevent you from getting a good night’s sleep.
2. Work in a quiet place
Study in the quiet space that works best for you. Many students go to their local library during the final months of study and leading up to exams. The library is a fantastic resource, but you might find that it can get too crowded or distracting for you to do your best work there.
3. Lock in the information
Making flashcards and notes is crucial in the lead-up to exams. However, as the day of the exam gets nearer, concentrate on using them, not making them! It’s time to concentrate on getting the material into your head, not making new notes.
4. Use your revision books and notes
Textbooks contain the maximum amount of information and are meant to be used over several years. Coming up to exams, use your class notes and compact revision books instead.
5. Subliminal study
Record yourself reading quotes and study material out loud, then listen to them as you go for a walk or run. This subliminal form of study can be surprisingly effective, especially for auditory learners. Repeating something over and over embeds information in your subconscious. You may even find yourself dreaming about Eavan Boland’s ‘War Horse’ clip clopping down the street or about the difference between stalagmites and stalactites.
