Apps and other resources

Anki

A free flashcard program.

Brainscape

Use AI to find or make flashcards from any source and learn faster with spaced repetition.

Focus apps

If you find it hard to resist the lure of all the distractions that are only a click away, try an app that blocks your internet access for a set period of time. Here are a few examples:

  • Cold Turkey Blocker makes it almost impossible to stop the block once you lock it.
  • Freedom blocks distractions on all your devices at once.
  • LeechBlock NG lets you block up to 30 sets of sites, with different times and days for each set.
  • One sec adds a little friction to every distraction before you get sucked into an endless loophole designed to draw you in for hours.
  • PawBlock is a distraction blocker but with cute animal pictures.
  • SelfControl is a nuclear option! Set a period of time to block for, add sites to your blocklist and click ‘Start’. Until that timer expires, you won’t be able to access those sites, even if you restart your computer or delete the application.
  • Session is a combination Pomodoro timer (see ‘Study timers’ below) and distraction blocker.

Gizmo

Uses AI to quickly turn notes, YouTube videos, recordings and more into flashcards. It also offers AI quizzes to reinforce active recall and spaced repetition.

Google NotebookLM

Acts as a virtual research assistant, summarising information, explaining concepts and creating new connections based on the sources that you upload to it.

Quizlet

Choose from millions of pre-made decks or create your own set of flashcards.

Study timers

There are lots of free or paid apps and websites that offer study timers, many of which are based on the Pomodoro technique of studying in 25-minute sessions, then taking a short break. Some also have a built-in ability to block other online distractions (see ‘Focus apps’ above). Here are a few examples:

  • Flow structures your work into short intervals with recurring breaks in between.
  • Forest incentivises you to stay focused – when you start to work, you plant a tree that continues to grow while you focus on your work.
  • Otto helps you manage your time by making a little progress each day.
  • Pomodor is a simple web-based Pomodoro timer.
  • Session helps you focus and be more mindful by blocking distractions and tracking your progress (Apple users only).
  • Study Bunny – a motivational study timer.
